BucovinaThe region of Bucovina is very famous for the religious establishments, surrounded by rarely seen landscapes and a part of the UNESCO Patrimony. The frescoes covering the external walls have faced the fury of nature and resisted to it. Among them, Voronet is one of the most beautiful Orthodox churches in Europe, also named “The Sixteen Chapel of the East”. Stephan the Great found it in 1488 and the painting of the walls was made during the reign of his nephew, Peter Rareş. The chromatic of the frescoes is dominated by a very special blue tone, the extraordinary “Voronet blue”. The area that impresses every visitor for its dramatic subject is painted on the Western wall and it presents “The Last Judgement”. Moldovita Monastery was founded by Peter Rareş in 1532 and here is guarded the famous “Golden Apple”, a price that was received in 1977 by the painted monasteries in Bucovina from the International Federation of the Touristic Journalists. The most present color is brick red and the most important frescoes are “Siege of Constantinoplolis”, one of the 24 episodes of the hymn to Virgin Mary and “Jesus’ Arbor”. Two brothers of the royal family Movila founded Sucevita Monastery at the end of the 16th century. The specialists consider the “The Ladder of Ion of Sinai” to be quite rare for the medieval art in Romania and also one of the best frescoes in Sucevita. The same kind of frescoes can be seen at Humor and Arbore Monasteries. Every tourist should visit Suceava. This was, in the old times, the fortified capital of Moldavia and its ruins can be visited even today. Another lovely town is Radauti, where the master potter, Constantine Colibaba, laid the foundation of a beautiful ceramics school.
